Qualcomm officially announced snapdragon 480 5g, the company's latest 5g enabled processor and the first in its snapdragon 4 series of chips that power budget constrained Android devices that are often cheaper than most of Qualcomm's 5g efforts to date.


At first, the news of 4-series chips with 5g was released on IFA 2020, but today's announcement marks the first real detail of the new processor. Snapdragon 480 has an integrated snapdragon X51 modem and supports mmwave and networks below 6GHz.


Adding 5g to the 4 series may be one of the biggest factors to make the next generation network standard easier for global users. Currently, most 5g phones tend to cost more than $500 - the technology is usually limited to mid tier and flagship phones. But by adding it to the snapdragon 4 series, Qualcomm makes it easy for manufacturers to add 5g to the cheapest phones priced between $125 and $250. This means that 2021 may be the year when 5g mobile phones are really expected.


However, snapdragon 480 not only stands out because of its 5g support, but also hopes to provide a greater performance leap than its predecessor snapdragon 460.
