Samsung has added AI processing units to its new exynos9820 chip

Samsung today got a general idea of what the galaxy S10 will offer by launching its new exynos 9820 chip.

The new silicon chip is designed to run AI driven applications through dedicated "neural processing units" or npus on the board. Samsung said in a press release that this makes the chip perform AI tasks about seven times faster than the previous exynos 9810 chip.

As a result, faster processing times can be expected when using Bixby, the company's voice assistant. Samsung has been trying to make the technology compete with Amazon's Alexa and Google assistant. The goal is to create an entire ecosystem of devices, such as home appliances, that can run on Bixby.

"With NPU, AI related processing can be performed directly on the device without sending tasks to the server, providing faster performance and better personal information security," Samsung added The NPU will also power AI tasks through the camera so that it can recognize objects and automatically adjust photo taking settings based on surrounding light.
